As I posted on the social networks earlier tonight, Dara and I will very soon be commencing the formal planning of the Great Atlantic Canadian Trainventure! We are looking at a rough range of dates from July 21st through August 7th, as that’s about as much time off as I can spare and still account for Norwescon and for the minor oral surgery I have to have in May. (It’s a dental thing, and no real big deal, but I need to take a day off for it.)

We will be targeting arriving in St. John’s in Newfoundland on the 2nd so we can be there in time for the festival to start on the 3rd, and we’ll come home on the 6th, and I’ll take the 7th to get over being jetlagged and to decompress from OMG 2 1/2 weeks in Canada. :D

And that, O Internets, means that depending on when Dara and I can catch a train from Vancouver to Toronto, we will be arriving in Toronto somewhere between the 24th and 26th of July! We want to visit people in the Toronto area (including userinfocow and possibly also userinfoeeyorerin), but also to make bonus stops in Montreal and Moncton! So if you’re in any of these places OR within shouting distance of St. John’s, and you’d like to meet a couple of friendly and musical Cascadian elfchicks, I want to hear from you! Let me know if I should factor you into my plannings!

I am in Montreal, AND I know a good pub with live music.

Also I can get you hooked up with the best smoke meat and poutine, if either of you are wanting that. Likewise bagels. :D

I am curious how your answers compare with mine. :3 (My favourite poutine is Patati Patata at Saint-Laurent and Rachel, although I would say the best overall is La Banquise up by the park. And I'm definitely a Saint-Viateur partisan when it comes to bagels. Oh, and I'm vegetarian, but my best smoked meat experience when I wasn't was the smoked meat eggs benedict at Deli Joe in Petite-Italie by Station De Castelnau. ♥)

La Banquise is indeed fantastic. My absolute favourite's on the South Shore, though.

Fairmount! Fairmount all the way!

Ooh, really? Where? I often stay on the South Shore when I go (a close friend lives in Longueuil and my favourite pub is in Chambly), so new places there are always neat.

But, um, you can enjoy all the Fairmount bagels, then. :3

Hee. Definitely. :3

Although it really is more of a personal preference thing. I find Saint-Viateur's to be more chewy, more dense, and less sweet. So you can really nom into it.

But I find those good attributes! Not everyone does, and some people prefer *ahem* the other kind. :3

Oh cool :D I admit I haven't been there, as if I'm in that area I accidentally end up at Brutopia next door.. but next time I'm there I'll check it out :)

Suggested reading: Tanya Huff's new book The Wild Ways. It takes place in Eastern Canada, involves music and selkies, and is generally a fun romp.

The book before it is Enchantment Emporium, it is also a fun romp, but you don't need it to fully set up The Wild Ways.

I realize you hate to read and this will be a horrible burden, but I hope you try it out. ;)

Can't remember if you've read Huff or not, but for those who don't know, she is a Canadian writer.
